Catalytic Mechanism of Crown Ether
- The main characteristics of Crown Ethers is that they can form stable complexes with various metal salts, ammonium salts, organic cationic compounds, etc. Crown Ethers can dissolve various salts into organic solvents.
- Crown Ethers can dissolve alkali metal and organic alkali metal compounds in organic solvents. Therefore, they have wide applications in organic synthesis, optical resolution, heavy metal chelation, separation, analysis, and physiological activities in pharmaceuticals, biochemistry, and other fields.
- As a phase transfer catalyst, many reactions that are difficult to react or even do not occur under traditional conditions, now can proceed smoothly with Crown Ethers, which have fast rates, simple conditions, easy operation and high yields. For example, the condensation reaction yield of Benzoin in aqueous solution is extremely low. If adding 7% crown ether into the aqueous solution, we can obtain 78% Benzoin yield. This reaction can also be proceeded in Benzene or Acetonitrile. Although Potassium Cyanide is insoluble in Benzene, if adding 18-crown-6, not only can the reaction proceed, but the yield can reach up to 95%.
Application
- Used as curing accelerator in electronic sealing adhesives (such as 502 glue), improves reaction rate and stability.
- Used as phase transfer catalyst in organic synthesis chemistry, like Fluorination reaction phase transfer catalyst.
- Used as chelating agents, extractants for the separation and extraction of precious metals and rare earth elements.
- Used as Ionic conductive materials for electronic industry and raw materials for manufacturing liquid crystal display components.
